Star-Spangled Sugar (Experiment No. 6)

Though I join many Americans in being less-than-excited about the United States at the moment, I wanted to make an effort to bake something patriotic for family and friends this Fourth of July. I also wanted it to be rabbit shaped. I succeeded in one of these efforts.

Rice Krispie Treats are pretty much the simplest bake known to man, so I snagged a box of red, white and blue cereal and a couple of bags of Jet Puffs at my weekly grocery run.

The cute bunny head molds I ordered online turned out to be the size of ice cubes. Not exactly ideal for trying to shove molten marshmallow cereal into. Perhaps I'll try them for chocolate making.

About 37 seconds after I started, I realized I have never actually made these by myself before. But I followed the directions on the cereal box, melting a bit of butter then slowly melting the marshmallows. It was at the marshmallow pouring/ cereal mixing stage that I realized why my mom always wants an extra set of hands for this step, as the marshmallow needs to be coaxed out of the pan a bit, which is hard to do while also mixing it with cereal. Thankfully, my mixture recovered. I rolled it out, chilled it in the fridge, and ended up with tons of tasty treats (shaped, sadly, like boring old rectangles).

I gave some to my family, my friends, and some of my neighbors. One of my neighbors politely declined because they had already eaten too much sugar over the weekend. I don't understand that kind of willpower, but I admire it. Maybe they thought my little offering had COVID. It wasn't because they weren't delicious, because I have it on good authority (and my own) that they were.

I had great hopes to get my bun buns in a VOGUE-style cover shoot with the American flag, but they tried to murder each other again last week so I'm holding off on that for now. Here's our chonk supreme Celestey-girl showing off after her graduation from the Disney College of Knowledge:
